Meilisearch, a Paris, France-based creator of an open-source search engine built in Rust, announced that it raised $15 million in Series A funding, bringing its total raised to $22 million.
The round was led by Felicis, with participation from returning investors CRV, LocalGlobe, Mango Capital, Seedcamp, and the CEO of Vercel, Guillermo Rauch.
Meilisearch will use this fresh round of capital to expand its marketing and sales teams, transitioning to an enterprise-focused strategy while doubling its product-led growth.
"The amount of data generated by online services has exploded over the past few years, making high-speed search technology crucial for enterprises," says Quentin de Quelen, CEO of Meilisearch. "We believe that we can fill this gap by offering a simple and highly efficient search solution that slots seamlessly into any application or website. Now that we have succeeded in building a massive community of developers, we will take advantage of this new fundraising to expand enterprise support while continuing to provide an excellent experience for our open-source users."
Meilisearch has proven its developer popularity since going fully open source in 2020, with over 100,000 new engine installations per month and nearly 30,000 GitHub stars on its main repository. In the company's early days, it helped enterprises such as Veepee and Louis Vuitton improve their search experience.
The startup is now refocusing on enterprise clients, starting with the public release of Meilisearch Cloud, a fully managed software-as-a-service product. The much-anticipated "v1" release of the Meilisearch engine will be closely followed by the public launch of Meilisearch Cloud in November 2022.
